Opening Ceremonies at Wesley Chapel

Mayor of Buckhannon, Nancy Shobe
AMA President Robert Rasor
The featured highlight of the opening ceremony, the re-enactment of "Effie Hotchkiss, In Her Own Words" by actors, Frances Nichols & Sue Mason, script by Ed Youngblood based on diaries kept by Effie. In 1915, Effie Hotchkiss became the first woman to ride across the country and back on a motorcycle when she and her mother, riding in the sidecar of her Harley-Davidson, traveled from New York to San Francisco and back. This portrayal of a woman motorcycling pioneer was so inspiring and entertaining, thoroughly enjoyed by an audience of enthusiasts that ended with a standing ovation. The script was not only interesting and historical but witty and humorous as well. I can't wait for the printed versions of the journals to be published. Motor Maids have made a financial commitment to Ed Youngblood to back him in his endeavor to see that come to fruition. I can't wait to read it! She's really quite an amazing woman in many aspects.
Here's my "Diane" story. First of all, I arrived very early to get a front row seat for the presentation. A well-dressed woman and her entourage asked if the seats next to me were taken, I said no but remarked I didn't want to move over any further because I had hoped to get good photographs. They were very pleasant about that and proceeded to sit, I did however move slightly to accomodate one more on the end. They asked if I was from the media, I said, "No, I'm just little ol' Diane from Pennsylvania" They proceeded to introduce themselves. It turned out the woman was, Mayor of Buckhannon, Nancy Shobe, first guest speaker for the opening ceremonies, her two councilmen and her husband, Fred. (I wouldn't move over for the honored guest, the mayor! Yikes!) I apologized for not knowing and she was very charming. We laughed and she even offered to switch places after she spoke so I could get the best pictures possible. I said there was no need, and while waiting, the gentlemen introduced themselves. They joked that the re-enactment was partly due to their effort, since THEY were "Harley-Davidson"; Harley Brown and Kenny Davidson, no kidding...They seemed to get alot of mileage out of that joke for this event but remarked the regular townsfolk didn't quite see the humor--they were jolly good ol' boys and jumped at the chance to pose for a picture. So once again, I inadventently caused a little commotion without even trying....Everyone was so nice & friendly in Buchannon, that southern hospitality again!

After leaving Wesley Chapel, I began to get the idea just how many participants were at the conference. It was awesome! All united in their passon for motorcycling! Many women's motorcycling clubs were represented, Motor Maids, Women in the Wind, Women on Wheels, Leather & Lace MC, SPOKES, Artemis, there's even a PMS Club, that is Pennsylvania Motorcycling Society... We were treated to refreshments, popcorn, and socializing on the green. How cool that I was here! Little ol' me...
